political class. >> is this american theater. a book comes out tales of dysfunctional white house. republican candidates square off on stage. who won the media vote? >> my next-door neighbor's two dogs have created more shovel ready jobs than this current-- (laughter) >> on the panel this week, writer and fox news contributor judy miller. syndicated columnists cal thomas. jim pinkerton, the young american conservative magazine and daily beast, kirsten powers. i'm jon scott, fox news watch is on right now. warren buffett's secretary shouldn't pay a higher tax rate than warren buffett. there's no justification for it. it is wrong that in the united states of america, a teacher, a nurse or a construction

worker who earns $50,000, should pay higher tax rate than somebody pulling in 50 million dollars. >> a very busy week for the media began with the president pitching his latest tax plan, citing what is now referred to as the buffett rule. so, let's start there. the media theme, judy, seems to be that the, you know, it's time to soak the rich and ask them to pay more money, but the rich do pay an awful lot of taxes. >> right, it's true. it was very interesting, the disconnect between the media and the people. the american people seem to like this speech, but boy, the media certainly didn't and some of the most stallwart liberal columnists deserted the president on this and said, you know, hey, wait a minute, this is not what we wanted, this isn't what we had signed up for. so, it was an odd week. >> jon: jim, the president, the line he keeps using about warren buffett's secretary pays less in taxes or pays a lower tax rate than warren

buffett, has that been adequately investigated? >> smart alec's said let's see warren buffett's tax returns and see what he's actually paying. this is the complicated issue because a few months ago, the president said he he was going to fit in again, jobs and the pivot he's made in his presidency and pivots to populism, class warfare, wlaefr you want to call it and the the media is confused. they like him and bothers them a little bit what joel koffman of new gee off if i told, based on trust funds and capital gains and so on, they're all a part of that, even if they're not themselves reporters, their in-laws of wall street and they're bothered by this. >> jon: cal, new york times, david brooks, labeled himself an obama sap for believing in all of of the hope and change promises. have the liberal media lost faith in this president? >> i think they're starting to

lose faith, but they haven't lost faith in liberalism and that's a very important distinction. let's go back to what david brooks said, the big setup for the 2008 campaign. he went so far as to say that obama had the best crease in his pants that anybody had and therefore, he'll make a great president. i'm thinking of investing in a dry cleaners. this is totally over the top. they completely abandoned any rational, and i hope that, as we enter now the next campaign, we start running some of those sound bites and excerpts from some of these columns that journalists who were in bed with the president and have a lot to apologize for. >> jon: kirsten, steve chaplain from the chicago tribune wrote a column, when ronald reagan ran for reelection, morning in america and for barack obama, it's more like midnight in a coal mine and the piece was titled "why obama should withdraw", he wants him to bull an lbj and just not run again. >> yes, that's not going to

happen. can i say, i don't think that david brooks is a liberal columnist, but we're talking about sort of the liberal media abandoning him. and certainly people who supported him have abandoned him, are starting to abandon him and you see a lot of people who are very disappointed in him and you know, very upset that he hasn't lived up to what they hoped he would be, but david brooks was one who was sort of enamoured of him, i guess. >> here is another example from bill keller in the new york times. >> exactly. >> the decline in obama's political misfortunes, could be attributed to the intractable legacy bequeathed by george w. bush, republican resistance amounting to sabotage, unrealistic expectations and disenchantment of the some of the president's supporters and to be sure, the man himself. >> that's one out of four is obama's responsibility. that's real progress for bill keller in the new york times acknowledging there's some

responsibility. >> and they're disappointed in obama and happy to say so as they indulge themselves and say so and trashing the republicans every chance they can get. >> anna cnn interview of dick cheney, don't you think that president bush 41 was real good to raise chances and changed the secretary of defense and cheney said no, king asked the question the second time and according to the mrc transcripts and king's leading questions called for 27 lines and cheney's answering saying no, eight lines. king was trying so hard to make cheney say what he wanted him to say. >> jon: and the solyndra solar scandal is proving embarrassment through the media for the white house. and also a new book from ron suskind, he paints the obama white house at not only dysfunctional, but demeaning to women? >> yeah, what's interesting about that. you had the women, a couple of the women who were quoted coming out and saying, no, i never said that. it's not that way at all. it's actually really great. so he had to, suskind had to turn around and let a reporter

listen to one of the recordings, of the phone call which turned out was verbatim how he quoted the person in the the book. >> and he had that quote. >> it's incredible to be trashing someone as a liar he when you actually said exactly that quote. it wasn't even, now-- >> and let's put it on the screen, what was said. we have it here. she said but looking back and alita dunn, asked about it two years later this place to be in court for a whose pill workplace because it actually fit all of the classic legal requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace to women. that's the quote she denied and turned out he had it in place. >> at the beginning of the quote she said were it not for the president and then the rest of the quote. >> she said i didn't work for the president, that's different. >> and anita dunn's case, the hall mark of a good maoist and turn on a dime and saying whatever the party line is. >> and interesting how the books are treated in the media. ron suskind went on the today

show and ann curry, what about the misspelling of this word and how do you know the-- >> and when bob woodward comes on the show and writes something about bill clinton or another democrat, the-- how did you find out about this. and how did you, the questions are totally different. >> or when ron suskind writes a bad bag about george bush, no problem. >> a negative book. >> now they're saying he spent mr. rogers' name wrong. >> and accused him of plagiarism and lift add passage from wikileaks, what passage that? >> the basic premise of the book, obama got duped by-- and proven true as it speaks and that's what the white house is afraid of. >> and written another book. the book come ports with, if you look at other box written about this administration,

settlements and occupation when it comes to the palestinians, i think those who argue that the president is guilty of moral equivalencesy do not have it right. there was nothing in the special israel wouldn't have loved. >> what about the speech six months ago, should be a palestinian state, connecting the gaza strip and the state with a land bridge. i would say this is the new election minded obama and if the media-- what they should have noted there have been two obama policies on this. the one the first two and a half years and the one today. >> is this another pivot, jim? >> has that been covered? >> no, obama can turn on a dime. it must be an election year because it's astonishing frankly that he can give that speech and as a person who preferred his previous

positions on things, it's such pandering and blatant for him to turn and now just completely-- >> and cal, new york magazine came out this week with this cover, the first jewish president. why did they do that? >> well, look, we're still dealing with the aftermath of that anthony weiner lost seat in new york, and the polls showing a lessening of the jewish support for the president and i think that was behind a lot of the speech. let me tell you i think one of the one of the best journalists on this, besides myself, one of the points she made with the media have treated israeli and palestinian cause as moral e-- morally equivalent and their histories as morally equivalent as well. and we take the sayings of abbas, mahmoud abbas, the president of the palestinian authority at face value about their supposed rights and the rest and the media write it up

as if it's gospel and hardly challenging it. they need the history on the middle east they're not getting, frankly. the european press has the not been particularly kind to the president. >> no, it hasn't been and what's interesting is that this was obama's effort to kind of involve them in a much more prominent way than had been seen in the past. it was nicolas sarkozy, the president of france, who actually gave the kind of compromised proposal at the united nations this week. it's more of obama stepping back and saying, okay, european quartet, you want to roll? come and get it. at this point, president obama would be pleased to hand the issue over to the europeans. >> another side of the political season we're in of the, rick perry, leading in many polls among the republicans, he says it's time to change our policy of appeasement toward the palestinians. now, he took a real hit in the media for being that public. >> and just an outrageous statement.

fox news yesterday and this is a wide open race and four years ago, rudy guiliani was frontrunners. and the media is going to be driving a lot of that. >> i was going to say, you still play the horse race game. the polls immediately afterwards, dick morris is on the network a lot doing his lunch break thing, who won, who lost. but i will say that i think that the fox google relationship was really fascinating. the business of the videoed questions coming in, a feeling of participation by the people instead of this blaockade of three or four anchor tapes asking gotcha questions. it was fascinating and one of the best i've seen. >> jon: and the folks in the room. >> it's been, throughout these debates, actually there's been some sort of disturbing moments that happened with the audience, where cheering, when talking about the death

penalty in last night's debate, talking about when a gay soldier asked a question, booing that person. i mean, it's been very, i think, very disturbing, another one, talked about an uninsured person who got sick and even, even rick perry said afterwards he was sort of taken aback by that. it's interesting we haven't seen that much of this in other election cycles and not quite sure. >> what we've seen, the opposite here, the mainstream media loving it. oh, those mean republicans, they love the death penalty and troy davis, an innocent man, they say, was executed. and i think the media are doing their best making it about, people in the audience, people he they don't like. >> jon: and what about the media change of perception of mitt romney from four years ago. >> i think he is, as the front runner, still, i believe, in the kind of political area,
